About Jonathan Lucas

One of the UK’s leading paediatric spinal surgeons

Jonathan Lucas MBBS, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Orth & Tr)

Mr Jonathan Lucas is a specialist consultant spinal surgeon. He brings over 20 years’ consultant surgical experience, with specific expertise in paediatric scoliosis, spondylolisthesis and deformity correction.

He qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London University. His subsequent specialist spinal fellowship training was at The Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, and as a British Orthopaedic Spinal Fellow to the USA.

In 1999, he was appointed consultant, and was Lead Clinician for Spinal Surgery from 2006 to 2019. He now leads the Paediatric Orthopaedic and Spine Department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital (GSTH) and Evelina London Children's Hospital (ELCH).

Mr Lucas is dedicated to providing the safest and highest quality spinal surgery possible, working within multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best outcomes for his patients and their families.

He has published on safety in spinal surgery and leads the ELCH Paediatric Spinal Unit’s research program. He is editor of Aird’s Companion to Surgery, and has twice won Best Paper at the British Association of Spinal Surgeons.

Dedicated to teaching future generations of UK and international spine surgeons, Mr Lucas is an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) examiner. He is also former Chairman of AO Spine UK, and Education Secretary of the British Scoliosis Society.

Mr Lucas’ full biography

Consultant career

Mr Lucas was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Spinal Surgery in October 1999. He was Head of Trauma at Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) in the early 2000s, before developing his subspecialty of Spinal Surgery for adults and paediatrics, leading to an appointment as Head of the GSTT Spine Service from 2006 to 2019.

He further refined his special interest into paediatric spine surgery, and was appointed Head of Paediatric Spine and Orthopaedic Surgery for the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, GSTT in 2019.

From 2005, Mr Lucas also worked privately at HCA Healthcare UK, treating adults at London Bridge Hospital and children at The Portland Hospital. In 2019, he was approached to head up the new paediatric spine service at The Portland.

Mr Lucas sees more than 150 cases of paediatric spinal deformity surgery  each year, and has overseen more than 1,200 paediatric spinal deformity surgical cases to date in total.

Training

Mr Lucas completed his undergraduate training from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, part of the University of London, gaining the MBBS in 1988. His basic surgical training was on the St Bartholomew’s surgical rotation, and he was made a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS(Eng)) in 1992.

He undertook his orthopaedic training as a Registrar and Senior Registrar on the South East Thames Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training Program, gaining the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS (Orth and Tr)) in 1998, with completion of training and admission onto the Specialist Register (CCST) that same year.

Specialist spinal surgical training

Mr Lucas undertook specialist spinal surgical training as Senior Spinal Fellow at The Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham for 14 months.

This then followed by a British Orthopaedic Travelling Fellowship to the USA, visiting  University Hospitals Spine Institute at the Case Western Reserve University of Medicine, Cleveland; the Twin Cities Spine Centre at the University of Minnesota; and the University of California’s Department of Orthopaedics.

Following this, Mr Lucas was appointed as Orthopaedic Consultant to Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
